Cross cutting approaches
In line with the Strategy 2016-2020, Tdh commits to deliver through its interventions on the cross-cutting issues of Gender & Diversity Equality, Participation, Partnership, Do-No-Harm, and LRRD. Through these cross-cutting issues, Tdh wants to promote a Human-Rights Based Approach to programming, and an overall advancement of quality and accountability by ensuring meaningful access to Tdh services for all in safety and dignity.

In its Strategy 2016-2020, Tdh commits to strengthening its Quality & Accountability approach using the Core Humanitarian Standard as a reference. All of these cross-cutting issues, as well as the broader actions of the Tdh Quality & Accountability Unit, are designed from the start to align with the Core Humanitarian Standard.

Gender & Diversity: Tdh strives to adopt a proactive approach that aims to overcome existing biases, discrimination, prejudices and inequalities in a given context by taking into account the different needs, abilities, and interests of our target populations. This requires understanding norms and attitudes associated with specific genders and diversities, and how these affect power relations and consequently access to resources and opportunities.

Do No Harm: All interventions should avoid causing harm as
a result of its actions or inactions. Harm includes physical or psychological
harm to individuals or groups, as well as harm to the environment (economic,
social, political, climate, etc.) that might otherwise affect individuals or
groups. Do No Harm requires continuous monitoring and analysis to track potential
risks arising in an area of intervention.

Partnerships: The term "partnership" is used colloquially to denominate several types of relationships. These can include relationships with academic institutions, engagement in various inter-agency forums, as well as operational relationships with peer organizations, local partners, or government authorities. In 2019, Tdh will focus its efforts on clarifying these types of relationships, their strategic underpinnings, and the goals Tdh wants to achieve by establishing partnerships. Initially, the focus will be on operational relationships. These efforts will be reflected in a Tdh Policy on Partnerships (Q4 2019/Q1 2020) and will be supported through the gradual development of an accompanying toolkit.

Participation: Participation is both an objective in itself (as a right) and an approach that needs to be applied throughout every stage of the program and project cycles. Participation can take many forms, from passive transfer of knowledge to individuals and groups to enabling communities to control decision making and take ownership of their own recovery and development. Participation in contributes to more relevant interventions, greater empowerment of communities, and is essential to bringing about greater resilience in Tdh areas of intervention.

Linking Relief, Rehabilitation, and Development: Tdh is an organization driven by a sustainable development goal and combines humanitarian interventions and long-term development efforts, sometimes in the same country. It is therefore particularly important that emergency interventions support or at least do not impede long-term development projects and vice versa. Consequently, to ensure the quality of its programming, Tdh has established a rule that all emergency and humanitarian interventions must focus on the linking relief, rehabilitation and development contiguum (LRRD).
